Janette Mestre, Landscape Architect
"Lose the Lawn: New thinking about California landscapes"

Join Janette Mestre to learn more about how to create more diverse, artful, low maintenance and water friendly solutions to the classic landscape challenge: to mow or not to mow.

Southern California is a gardener’s dream with a climate to match, enabling us to enjoy our outdoor environment and extend our indoor living space outside.  But our water supplies are uneven at best, busy lives leave less time (and desire)for yardwork, and there’s a growing awareness of how landscape chemicals impact our ocean environment.  So traditional grass lawns with their mowing, blowing, and fertilizing requirements are not always the best choice for our landscapes.

Janette founded the Landscape Architecture firm of Mestre Design Group in 1987 to provide a diverse range of design and consulting services focused on resource preservation, water-efficient planting and irrigation design, and innovative hardscape installations.   As a LEED Certified Professional and member of the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) LEED for Homes and LEED for Neighborhood Development committees,  Janette’s projects include residential, commercial and institutional clients engaged in thinking in new ways about what a California landscape can be.  She has been dedicated to providing expertise and education promoting an integrated design philosophy for smart growth, efficient design, and sustainable development.

When not playing in the dirt, Janette spends as much time as possible in, on, or otherwise around the water, cooking, eating, hiking, and hanging out with friends.
